Makoto Shinkai, born Makoto Niitsu (新津 誠) on February 9, 1973, is a prominent Japanese director, author, and manga artist renowned for his stunning animation and storytelling. Shinkai embarked on his professional journey in 1996 as a video game animator with Nihon Falcom. His artistic talents began to shine in 1999 with the release of his original video animation (OVA), She and Her Cat, which garnered attention and set the stage for his future endeavors.

In collaboration with CoMix Wave Films, Shinkai released the science-fiction OVA Voices of a Distant Star in 2002, followed by his feature film debut, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in 2004. His second feature, 5 Centimeters per Second (2007), received widespread critical acclaim, establishing him as a leading figure in contemporary animation. This was succeeded by notable works such as Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) and The Garden of Words (2013), both of which showcased his ability to blend emotional narratives with breathtaking visuals.

Shinkai's 2016 masterpiece, Your Name, became a cultural phenomenon, becoming the third highest-grossing anime film ever. He continued his success with Weathering with You in 2019, which mirrored the acclaim of his previous works. His most recent film, Suzume, premiered in Japan in November 2022, further solidifying his status as a visionary in the world of animated cinema.
