Bryant Gumbel
Bryant Charles Gumbel, born on September 29, 1948, is a distinguished American television journalist and sportscaster, renowned for his impactful career spanning several decades. He gained prominence as the co-host of NBC's *Today*, where he served for 15 years, becoming a familiar face in American households. Gumbel, who is the younger brother of fellow sportscaster Greg Gumbel, began his career at NBC Sports in 1975, co-hosting the *GrandStand* NFL pre-game show alongside Jack Buck. Over the years, he covered a variety of major sporting events, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the NFL, while also notably hosting the prime-time coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
In 1982, Gumbel was appointed as the principal anchor of *Today*, where his engaging reporting took him around the globe, including assignments in Vietnam and Vatican City. His work during this period earned him multiple Emmy Awards and established him as the third-longest-serving co-host of the show, following Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. He departed from *Today* on January 3, 1997.
Transitioning to CBS, Gumbel hosted various programs before taking on the role of co-host for *The Early Show* starting November 1, 1999. Notably, he was the first to inform CBS viewers of the September 11 attacks in 2001. He concluded his tenure at CBS and *The Early Show* on May 17, 2002. Since 1995, Gumbel has also been at the helm of HBO's *Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel*, an investigative series acclaimed for its in-depth storytelling, winning a Peabody Award in 2012.
