His father had been poised to serve as a crucial witness in a libel case involving Central Television, which was being sued by Jim Craig, a figure linked to organized crime.

In his youth, Kielty showcased his athletic prowess as a talented Gaelic football player. He represented the Down GAA minor football team from 1987 to 1989 and played a vital role as the substitute goalkeeper during their victorious campaign in the 1987 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship.
