Pierre Brasseur
Pierre Brasseur, originally named Pierre-Albert Espinasse, was born on December 22, 1905, in Paris and passed away on August 16, 1972, in Bruneck, Italy. He carved a notable niche for himself as a French actor, continuing a family legacy deeply rooted in the performing arts. His father, Georges Espinasse, and mother, Germaine Brasseur, were both actors, and his grandfather, Jules Brasseur, also made his mark in the same field. This artistic lineage continued with his son Claude and grandson Alexandre, who both adopted the Brasseur name.
Brasseur earned acclaim for his vibrant portrayals of larger-than-life characters. He is especially celebrated in the English-speaking world for his semi-fictional role as Frédérick Lemaître in the iconic film "Les Enfants du Paradis" (Children of Paradise, 1945). Additionally, his chilling performance as Docteur Génessier in the horror classic "Eyes Without a Face" (Les Yeux sans visage, 1960), opposite Alida Valli, further solidified his status in cinematic history.
On May 30, 1927, Brasseur showcased his talent by taking on the role of Narrator in the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's opera-oratorio "Oedipus rex," marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. His contributions to the arts continue to resonate today.
