Payne's artistic journey began at Mississippi State University, where he honed his painting skills under the guidance of Brent Funderburk. He further developed his improvisational acting abilities with the Tupelo-based troupe West of Shake Rag and enhanced his craft through training at Second City in Chicago, Illinois.
