Paloma Romero

Paloma McLardy, born Paloma Romero on December 26, 1954, is a renowned Spanish drummer and songwriter celebrated for her pivotal role in the early punk music scene. She made her mark in 1976 by founding The Slits, a groundbreaking all-female punk band that challenged the norms of the genre. Although she departed from The Slits in 1978 before they recorded their iconic debut album, *Cut*, her songwriting contributions—such as "Shoplifting," "FM," "Newtown," and "Adventures Close to Home"—remain integral to the band's legacy.

Relocating from Spain to the UK, Palmolive became immersed in the dynamic London squat scene, where her relationship with Joe Strummer blossomed. As Strummer's fame grew with The Clash, she found herself deeply entrenched in the punk movement, forging key friendships and engaging in notable confrontations that shaped the era. Despite having no formal training, she picked up the drums and infused her raw passion and instinct into her performances.

In 1979, Palmolive joined The Raincoats, another influential all-female band. Their self-titled debut album, *The Raincoats*, is hailed as a seminal work in the post-punk and indie pop genres, earning recognition from *Rolling Stone* as one of the 100 most influential alternative albums of all time.
