Charles Michael Schuldiner (May 13, 1967 – December 13, 2001) was a groundbreaking American musician best known as the founder of the influential death metal band Death. Established in 1983, Schuldiner took on multiple roles within the band as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and chief songwriter, remaining its sole constant member until his untimely passing in 2001. His impact on the metal genre was profound, leading Kerrang! to honor him in their January 5, 2002 issue as "one of the most significant figures in the history of metal."

Schuldiner's exceptional guitar skills earned him notable rankings, including No. 10 in Joel McIver's 2009 publication, The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists, and No. 20 in Guitar World’s March 2004 list of the same title. In 1987, he further expanded his influence in the music industry by establishing Mutilation Music, a publishing company linked with the performance rights organization BMI.

Although often dubbed "The Godfather of death metal," Schuldiner humbly rejected the title, stating, "I don't think I should take the credits for this death metal stuff. I'm just a guy from a band, and I think Death is a metal band." His legacy endures through his innovative contributions to music and his lasting influence on the metal community. Schuldiner succumbed to a brain tumor in 2001, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the world of heavy metal.
