Stephen Clark Bullock, born on April 11, 1966, in Missoula, Montana, is a distinguished American politician and attorney, recognized for his tenure as the 24th governor of Montana from 2013 to 2021, representing the Democratic Party.
Bullock’s academic journey took him from Claremont McKenna College to Columbia Law School, laying the groundwork for his legal career. He initially served as legal counsel to the Secretary of State of Montana, progressing to roles such as Executive Assistant Attorney General and acting Chief Deputy Attorney General. Later, he joined the private sector as an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson before returning to Montana to establish his own law firm and work as an adjunct professor at George Washington University Law School.
In 2008, he achieved statewide prominence by being elected Montana’s Attorney General, holding office from 2009 until 2013. Bullock launched his gubernatorial campaign on September 7, 2011, winning the Democratic primary decisively and defeating Republican Rick Hill in the general election. He secured reelection in 2016 against Greg Gianforte.
As chair of the National Governors Association from 2018 to 2019, Bullock also made a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. After ending his campaign, he sought a Senate seat but was ultimately defeated by incumbent Steve Daines.
In 2022, he was appointed to the inaugural board of directors of the Foundation for America's Public Lands, reflecting his continued commitment to public service. Bullock remains a prominent advocate for bipartisanship and democratic values as of 2024, being the last Democrat to hold both the Attorney General and Governor positions in Montana.
