Joel F. Gardiner

Joel F. Gardiner is a multifaceted filmmaker, actor, writer, and composer hailing from Calgary, who thrives at the crossroads of genre storytelling, analog artistry, and community-oriented cinema. Emerging from Calgary’s underground comedy scene, he established the skit comedy group Pi/4 in the early 2000s, where he wore many hats as a writer, director, actor, and composer, crafting original music for experimental comedic shorts.

Gardiner is perhaps most renowned for his role as FPS Doug in "Pure Pwnage," one of the pioneering viral web series focused on gaming culture that later evolved into a television series on Canada’s Showcase and a popular feature film. His dynamic performance popularized the catchphrase “BOOM! HEADSHOT!” within gaming circles.

He has also collaborated with Clinton Jones of Corridor Digital, contributing to viral hits like "Cardboard Warfare 2" and "The Death of Gary Goldwater," projects celebrated for their unique blend of humor and high-end visual effects wrapped in a low-fidelity format.

In 2023, Gardiner launched Cosmic Darkness Productions, a studio dedicated to immersive, genre-driven narratives. Under this banner, he wrote, directed, and produced the short film "A Dollar Short for the Ferryman’s Fee," and co-produced a narrative music video for "Collective Unconscious" by Ride the Sky, working alongside local talents such as Thunder Lizard Collective.
