Robbie Shakespeare was a renowned Jamaican bass guitarist and record producer, celebrated primarily for his partnership with drummer Sly Dunbar in the influential reggae duo Sly and Robbie. Recognized as one of the foremost reggae bassists, Shakespeare earned the affectionate nickname "Basspeare" thanks to his innovative approach to bass playing, which incorporated electronic sounds and production techniques.
Throughout his illustrious career, Shakespeare collaborated with a myriad of reggae legends, including U-Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Augustus Pablo, Yellowman, and Black Uhuru. His artistic reach extended well beyond reggae, as he lent his production expertise to a diverse range of pop and rock musicians, such as Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Yoko Ono, Serge Gainsbourg, and Grace Jones.
Before forming the iconic duo with Dunbar, Shakespeare was a key member of the session bands the Revolutionaries and the Aggrovators, contributing to the vibrant sound of Jamaican music in the 1970s.
