Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, born in Kamenskoe in the Yekaterinoslav governorate of the Russian Empire, was a prominent Soviet politician and statesman who held the top leadership role in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) for 18 years, from 1964 until his death in 1982. He served as First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee from 1964 to 1966 before becoming General Secretary, a position he maintained until 1982. Notably, he was elevated to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1976.

Brezhnev's tenure was marked by significant achievements, including being honored as a Hero of the Soviet Union four times (1966, 1976, 1978, and 1981) and as a Hero of Socialist Labor in 1961. He also held various key roles, such as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1960 to 1964 and Secretary of the Central Committee in multiple capacities throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.

A prolific figure, Brezhnev received a total of 117 state awards, including eight Orders of Lenin and the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Nations in 1973. In 1979, he was awarded the Lenin Prize for Literature. His legacy includes participation in the Great Patriotic War, where he served as a political officer and took part in the iconic Victory Parade in Red Square on June 24, 1945.
