Cliff Lyons was a prominent American actor, stuntman, and second-unit director, renowned for his contributions to Western films, particularly those crafted by legendary filmmakers John Ford and John Wayne. Born on July 4, 1901, in South Dakota, Lyons was the son of Garrett Thomas Lyons and Wilhamena Johnson Lyons. His early years were spent on a farm, and he later moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he pursued business studies. However, his passion for horseback riding led him to abandon a conventional career for the rodeo circuit, ultimately arriving in Los Angeles at the age of 21.

Lyons quickly made a name for himself in the film industry, transitioning from small acting roles to stunts, thanks in part to producer Bud Barsky, who cast him in a series of low-budget Westerns directed by Paul Hurst. Although his aspirations for stardom were limited by the advent of sound films, his prowess as a stunt double flourished. He worked alongside famous cowboy stars, including Tom Mix and Ken Maynard, and formed a significant partnership with John Wayne, who helped launch Lyons' career as a second-unit director.

Over the years, Lyons collaborated with the talented Yakima Canutt and gained acclaim for his dynamic stunt coordination, particularly in the epic battle scenes of Wayne's "The Alamo" in 1960. He was married to actress Beth Marion from 1938 to 1955 and had two sons. Cliff Lyons passed away on January 6, 1974, in Los Angeles, leaving behind a legacy of thrilling cinematic moments and memorable contributions to the Western genre.
