Wilhelmenia Fernandez
Wilhelmenia Fernandez, also known as Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez, was a distinguished American soprano and actress, born on January 5, 1949, in Philadelphia. She began her musical journey in the choir of Main Street Baptist Church and later honed her vocal skills at the Settlement Music School under the guidance of soprano Tillie Barmach. Her formal training continued at the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts and the prestigious Juilliard School of Music.
Fernandez made her operatic debut as Bess in George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with the Houston Grand Opera, which toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Her Paris debut came in 1979 when she portrayed Musetta in La bohème, sharing the stage with renowned artists like Plácido Domingo and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. This performance captured the attention of French director Jean-Jacques Beineix, who cast her in the titular role of his critically acclaimed 1981 film Diva, a work that later gained a dedicated following.
In addition to her film success, Fernandez had a vibrant opera career, performing notable roles such as Musetta at the New York City Opera and returning to the Detroit Opera as Marguerite in Faust. She excelled in productions of Carmen, Carmen Jones, and Aïda, even performing at the Egyptian pyramids.
Her portrayal in Carmen Jones earned her the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1992. Fernandez's legacy includes recordings of spirituals and Gershwin songs, with her rendition of "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana" featured in Ridley Scott's 1987 film Someone to Watch Over Me. She held degrees in voice and education from the University of Kentucky and Georgetown College. Fernandez passed away on February 2, 2024, at the age of 75, in Lexington, Kentucky, after a battle with cancer.
