Lloyd Millard Bentsen Jr. (February 11, 1921 – May 23, 2006) was a prominent American political figure, best known for his tenure as the 69th Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1994. Bentsen's political career spanned over two decades, during which he represented Texas in the United States Senate from 1971 to 1993 and was the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee alongside Michael Dukakis in the 1988 election.

Hailing from Mission, Texas, Bentsen earned his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and served bravely in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courageous contributions in Europe. Following the war, he entered politics and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1948 to 1955. Bentsen made a significant impact in the Senate after defeating incumbent Ralph Yarborough in 1970 and subsequently beating George H. W. Bush in the general election. He was reelected in 1976, 1982, and 1988, and held the pivotal role of chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1987 to 1993.

Throughout his Senate career, Bentsen was instrumental in passing key legislation, including the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, and was influential in establishing individual retirement accounts. Although he sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, his efforts did not culminate in a successful campaign.
