Katie Johnson, originally named Bessie Kate Johnson, was born on November 18, 1878, in Clayton, Sussex, England. She enjoyed a long career in the performing arts, beginning her stage career in the 1890s before transitioning to film in the 1930s. In 1908, she entered into matrimony with fellow actor Frank Goodenough Bayley, who sadly passed away before her.

Johnson's film debut came at the age of 55 in 1932, but it wasn't until later in life that she received widespread recognition. At the age of 77, she delivered a standout performance as Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce in the 1955 Ealing Studios classic, The Ladykillers. This role garnered her significant acclaim and earned her a British Film Academy Award for Best British Actress.

Despite her late blossoming in the film industry, Johnson continued to work, appearing in the BBC science fiction series The Quatermass Experiment in 1953 and taking on the role of a spy in the 1946 film I See a Dark Stranger. Sadly, she passed away on May 4, 1957, in Elham, Kent, just two years after her celebrated performance in The Ladykillers, having only appeared in one additional film thereafter. Johnson's legacy remains as a testament to talent and perseverance in the entertainment industry.
