Dewayne Pomeroy

1 title Acting Jul 31, 1967 Died: Jul 30, 1984

Dewayne Pomeroy grew up navigating the harsh realities of life on the streets of Seattle in the 1980s. His experiences were poignantly captured in the documentary "Streetwise," which highlighted the struggles of homeless youth. Abandoned by his mother and with his father incarcerated, Dewayne often found himself seeking shelter in derelict houses or on the open streets, relying on panhandling—what he referred to as "spare changing"—to meet his daily needs.

Tragically, during the filming of "Streetwise," Dewayne took his own life in a juvenile detention facility, just days before he was due to be released. The filmmakers expressed their belief that he could not face the prospect of returning to life on the streets. In a somber testament to his solitary existence, only four individuals attended his funeral, which included two guards from the detention center who were there to monitor his father. At the service, Dewayne's father was seen by his side, offering an apology before the young man was laid to rest.

Dewayne's life and struggles later inspired the film "American Heart," where actor Edward Furlong portrayed his character, bringing renewed attention to the plight of homeless youth and their often-overlooked stories. His legacy continues to resonate in discussions surrounding homelessness and mental health.
