This groundbreaking television program, which would later be referred to simply as Donahue, debuted in Dayton, Ohio, in 1967 and ran for an impressive 29 years until its conclusion in New York City in 1996. Donahue's show was notable for being the first talk show format to actively involve audience participation, tackling contentious topics that often polarized American society, including abortion, civil rights, consumer advocacy, and issues related to war. A frequent guest on his show was the renowned consumer advocate Ralph Nader, whom Donahue supported in the 2000 presidential campaign. In 1996, he was honored by TV Guide, ranking #42 among the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.
