Carl Milton Levin (June 28, 1934 – July 29, 2021) was a prominent American lawyer and politician who represented Michigan in the United States Senate from 1979 until 2015. As a dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Levin made significant contributions to national defense and military policy, particularly during his tenure as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, a role he held from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2015.

Levin was born in Detroit and pursued higher education at Swarthmore College, followed by Harvard Law School, where he honed his legal expertise. His career began as the general counsel for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission from 1964 to 1967, where he played a crucial role in advocating for civil rights. He then served as a special assistant attorney general in Michigan before entering elected office.

From 1969 to 1977, Levin was a member of the Detroit City Council, with his final four years as the council's president. His legislative work in the Senate was marked by a deep commitment to public service, earning him respect on both sides of the aisle.
