Orville Sherman was born in Oklahoma, where his great-grandfather secured land in 1894. Growing up in a frontier environment likely influenced his portrayal of cowboys, a role he often embodied in numerous television episodes, primarily Westerns. Although his on-screen appearances were often brief, Orville excelled in his craft. He began tap dancing at the tender age of nine and left home at 19 to chase his aspirations in the performing arts.

By the time the 1940 U.S. census was conducted, Orville was residing as a boarder in Shawnee, Oklahoma, identifying himself as an "actor, dancer, director." He enlisted in the military during World War II while working with a small theater group in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Following the war, he transitioned to New York, where he performed on stage before traveling to England to star in "Oklahoma," a production that introduced him to his future wife, actress Marcella Dodge.

The couple married in 1948 and relocated to California from New York City in 1956, continuing to work in film and television until Orville's passing. Family members of his brother noted that Orville was too engrossed in his career to attend their father's funeral in 1959. After divorcing his first wife in the 1960s, he remarried in 1973 to Jean Reno, eight years his senior. That same year, he became a minister, teaching speech at the Church of Religious Science in Downey, California. Tragically, Orville passed away alone from prostate cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 68, with no known family left.
