Rebecca St. James
Rebecca Jean Smallbone, known professionally as Rebecca St. James, was born on July 26, 1977, in Sydney, Australia, to David and Helen Smallbone. As the eldest of seven siblings—five brothers and two sisters—she discovered her passion for music early, taking the lead as a vocalist at her Christian school when she was just thirteen. This talent caught the attention of noted artist Carman, who invited her to open his shows during his Australian tour. That same year, she released her debut album, "Refresh My Heart."
In 1990, the Smallbone family relocated to America when David Smallbone accepted a job offer, which unfortunately fell through shortly after their arrival. Lacking funds to return to Australia, the family persevered, relying on their faith and performing various odd jobs to make ends meet. Remarkably, during this challenging time, they received support from the community, including keys to a van and assistance with medical expenses for the youngest member of the family, Libby.
At the age of sixteen, Rebecca signed a record deal that launched her successful career, which has spanned over two decades. Since her self-titled debut in 1994, she has inspired countless individuals, particularly teenagers, to embrace a life devoted to faith and service, leaving a profound impact on the Christian music scene.
