Rodney Dangerfield
Rodney Dangerfield, born Jack Roy as Jacob Rodney Cohen on November 22, 1921, passed away on October 5, 2004. He was a renowned American comedian, actor, screenwriter, and producer, distinguished for his self-deprecating humor and his memorable catchphrase, "I don't get no respect!" which became a central theme of his comedic routines.
Dangerfield kickstarted his career performing stand-up at the Fantasy Lounge in New York City. His comedic style gained traction, leading to a regular presence on late-night talk shows during the 1960s and 1970s, ultimately evolving into a prominent act along the Las Vegas casino circuit. The origin of his iconic catchphrase stems from an attempt to enhance one of his jokes. Initially, he expressed, "I played hide and seek; they wouldn't even look for me." He later reformulated it to "I get no respect," which resonated with audiences and became a signature aspect of his performances.
In the 1970s, Dangerfield took on minor roles in films such as The Projectionist. However, he rose to prominence with his breakout performance in the 1980 comedy Caddyshack, where he portrayed a boisterous millionaire golfer. His success continued with leading roles in Easy Money (1983) and Back to School (1986). Throughout his life, he maintained a busy film career primarily in the comedy genre, though he also showcased his range in a dramatic role as an abusive father in the 1994 film Natural Born Killers.
