Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is a prominent Chinese contemporary artist and outspoken activist known for his critical stance on governmental policies regarding democracy and human rights. Born in the remote region of north-west China, Ai faced significant adversity in his early life due to his father's political exile. His activism gained international attention when he investigated the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, uncovering the corruption surrounding school collapses that resulted in numerous fatalities.

In 2011, Ai was detained at Beijing Capital International Airport on charges related to economic crimes, leading to an 81-day imprisonment without formal charges. Despite this, he emerged as a key figure in modern Chinese culture, blending art with activism to address pressing social and political issues. After being permitted to leave China in 2015, Ai Weiwei settled in Berlin, Germany, and has since relocated to Cambridge, UK, with his family.
