He became a prominent figure in the avant-garde performance scene, often recognized by his stage name, Orlando or The Incredible Orlando. Birkett, who hailed from a Romani family, initially worked as an artist's model for renowned painter David Hockney before taking on a role as a stagehand at the Grand Theatre in Leeds in 1950.
His career took a significant turn in the 1960s when he began collaborating with influential filmmaker Derek Jarman. Birkett's captivating performances graced several of Jarman's films, including *Jubilee*, *The Tempest*, *Caravaggio*, and *The Garden*, showcasing his unique artistic vision and creativity.
