2 titles Acting Mar 19, 1890 Died: Aug 31, 1958 Chicago, Illinois, USA

Gayne Whitman, originally named Alfred D. Vosburgh, was born on March 19, 1890, in Chicago, Illinois, and established himself as a prominent figure in the American entertainment industry as both a radio and film actor. Over the span of his extensive career, he featured in an impressive 213 films from 1904 to 1957. In his early film appearances, he was credited under his birth name, but he adopted the stage name Alfred Whitman following his leading role in the 1917 film *Princess of the Dark*. This change was motivated by the social climate of the time, as he wanted to avoid the negative connotations associated with a German-sounding name during World War I.

Whitman's theatrical journey began in 1921 at the Morosco Theater in Los Angeles, where he honed his craft before returning to the silver screen in 1925 when he signed with Warner Bros. His versatility extended beyond film; on radio, he captivated audiences with his portrayal of the titular character in *Chandu the Magician* and served as the narrator for popular shows such as *Lassie* and *Strange as It Seems*. He also lent his voice as an announcer on programs like *Paducah Plantation*. Gayne Whitman's diverse contributions to both film and radio left a lasting impact on the entertainment landscape before his passing on August 31, 1958.
