Žarko Laušević
**Žarko Laušević: A Life of Art and Tragedy**
Žarko Laušević, a Serbian actor of extraordinary talent, rose to prominence as one of the most gifted performers of his generation. By age 33, he had become a leading figure across the former Yugoslavia, earning acclaim for his versatility on both stage and screen. His career was marked by powerful dramatic performances that showcased a rare emotional depth.
However, Laušević’s life took a devastating turn in July 1993. Following a quarrel with a group of local youths, a fistfight escalated, and Laušević fired his handgun, killing two young men and seriously wounding a third. Initially sentenced to prison by a Montenegrin court, his conviction was later overturned by a Yugoslav appellate court, which found that the lower court had improperly dismissed his self-defense claim. The punishment was significantly reduced, and Laušević served four years and seven months before his release.
Legal turmoil persisted. The Montenegrin prosecution appealed, leading to numerous retrials and inconsistent rulings. In 2001, the original 13-year sentence was reinstated. By then, Laušević had left Yugoslavia for the United States, reportedly fearing revenge from the victims’ families. He has lived in the U.S. ever since, currently fighting deportation proceedings.
Laušević’s story remains a haunting intersection of artistic brilliance and personal tragedy, a life forever altered by a moment of violence.
