Yacef Saâdi (January 20, 1928 – September 10, 2021) was a prominent figure in Algeria's struggle for independence, serving as a leader within the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the tumultuous conflict against French colonial rule. His early career began as an apprentice baker, but his political awakening came in 1945 when he joined the Algerian People's Party (PPA). Following his involvement with the armed wing of the PPA, Saâdi became deeply entrenched in the FLN by 1955, marking the onset of the war for independence.

Notably, after the war, he collaborated with Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo on the acclaimed film "The Battle of Algiers" (1966), which was inspired by his own experiences. In the film, he portrayed a character named Djafar, reflecting his pivotal role in the events of the battle. Saâdi's memoir, "Souvenirs de la Bataille d'Alger," was published in 1962, providing a personal account of the conflict.

In the years following Algeria's independence in 1962, he held significant positions, including the presidency of the National Center for Friendship with Peoples and the presidency of the USM Alger football club from 1972 to 1975. In 2001, he was appointed senator by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, although his term was not renewed in 2016. Saâdi's legacy as a freedom fighter and cultural figure remains influential, and he was approached by both the FBI and CIA in 2003 for insights into guerrilla warfare, which he declined.
