Jeff Baena (June 29, 1977 – January 3, 2025) was a prominent American screenwriter and film director celebrated for his unique blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling. His notable works include the 2014 zombie comedy *Life After Beth*, the ensemble piece *Joshy* (2016), the quirky comedy *The Little Hours* (2017), the psychological drama *Horse Girl* (2020), and the romantic comedy *Spin Me Round* (2022). Baena also co-wrote the acclaimed film *I Heart Huckabees* (2004), directed by David O. Russell.

A graduate of NYU Film School, Baena began his career in Los Angeles, initially working as a production assistant for legendary director Robert Zemeckis. He later transitioned to an assistant editor role for David O. Russell, where a chance conversation during his recovery from an eye injury sparked a collaborative partnership that produced four scripts, including *I Heart Huckabees*.

Although Baena initially intended *Joshy* to be his directorial debut, he pivoted to *Life After Beth*, a project he began writing in 2003. His subsequent film, *The Little Hours*, showcased a talented cast that included Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, and John C. Reilly, further solidifying his reputation in indie filmmaking. *Horse Girl*, which he co-wrote and starred Alison Brie, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, showcasing his ability to weave complex narratives with emotional depth. Baena's work continues to resonate with audiences, marking him as a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema.
