Olga James Adderley-Chandler (February 16, 1929 – January 25, 2025) emerged from a rich musical background, with a saxophonist father and a dancer mother. She honed her craft at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she focused on opera. In 1952, James made her professional debut in Paris with a performance in the opera *Four Saints in Three Acts*.

Upon her return to the United States, she joined the all-Black revue at Club Harlem in Atlantic City. It was during this engagement that she auditioned for Otto Preminger’s *Carmen Jones*, a groundbreaking musical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s opera. James landed the role of Cindy Lou, the love interest of Joe, played by Harry Belafonte, which helped elevate her profile in the entertainment industry.

In 1956, she made her sole Broadway appearance in *Mr. Wonderful*, portraying Ethel Pearson, who performed the title number. Beyond her stage and film roles, James became a celebrated nightclub performer, captivating audiences with her powerful voice and charisma.

Her personal life intertwined with her professional journey when she married famed saxophonist Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley in 1962. Their partnership lasted until his passing in 1975. In 1990, she wed singer and civil rights advocate Len Chandler, who passed away in 2023. Throughout her life, James left an indelible mark on the worlds of music and performance.
