Sherman Alexander Hemsley (February 1, 1938 – July 24, 2012) was a distinguished American actor celebrated primarily for his portrayal of George Jefferson, a character that became iconic through the CBS sitcoms All in the Family and its successful spin-off The Jeffersons. Hemsley also showcased his talent as Deacon Ernest Frye in NBC's Amen and lent his voice to B.P. Richfield in the ABC series Dinosaurs. His performance in The Jeffersons earned him nominations for both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award, alongside a prestigious NAACP Image Award for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Hemsley was raised by his mother, a lamp factory worker, and did not meet his father until he was 14. He briefly attended high school before enlisting in the United States Air Force, serving four years. Upon returning to civilian life, he worked at the United States Postal Service while pursuing dramatic arts at night. Hemsley made his Broadway debut in the early 1970s in the musical Purlie, which led to his casting in All in the Family after creator Norman Lear recognized his talent.

Despite his on-screen success, Hemsley was known for his private nature, avoiding the Hollywood spotlight. He remained unmarried and childless, with little public knowledge about his personal life. Hemsley passed away in his home in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 74, due to complications from lung cancer. His legacy lives on through his memorable performances and contributions to American television.
