Oksana Akinshina, born in Leningrad (now known as Saint Petersburg, Russia) during the Soviet era, has her roots in a family where her father worked as a car mechanic and her mother was an accountant. She has a younger sister as well. Akinshina began her acting career at the age of 12 when she was spotted by director Sergei Bodrov, Jr. She made her cinematic debut in the Russian crime drama Sisters (2001), which was also Bodrov's first directorial venture. Her second film, Lilya 4-Ever (2001), garnered significant acclaim, earning her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2002 European Film Awards. Although she did not win—losing out to the ensemble cast of 8 Women (2002), directed by François Ozon—she did receive the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, a prestigious honor in Swedish cinema.

Following her early success, Akinshina appeared in several notable films, including Het Zuiden, directed by Martin Koolhoven, and The Bourne Supremacy (2004), helmed by Paul Greengrass. Between 2007 and 2010, she was married to businessman Dmitry Litvinov, with whom she shares a son, Filip, born on June 2, 2009. Akinshina married film producer Archil Gelovani in 2012. Their family grew with the birth of her second son, Konstantin, on January 15, 2013, and a daughter on January 29, 2017.
