Cynthia Ellen Nixon, born on April 9, 1966, is a multifaceted American actress, activist, and theater director. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Miranda Hobbes in HBO's iconic series Sex and the City, which aired from 1998 to 2004. Her performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2004. Nixon reprised this beloved character in the subsequent films, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), as well as in the recent revival series, And Just Like That... (2021–present). Her filmography also includes noteworthy performances in Amadeus (1984), James White (2015), and A Quiet Passion (2016), where she portrayed Emily Dickinson.

Nixon's theatrical career began with her Broadway debut in the 1980 revival of The Philadelphia Story, followed by significant roles in productions such as The Real Thing (1983) and Wit (2012). She received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2006 for her role in Rabbit Hole and won a Primetime Emmy in 2008 for her guest role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Additionally, she was awarded a Grammy for her contribution to An Inconvenient Truth in 2009.

In 2018, Nixon ventured into politics, announcing her candidacy for Governor of New York against incumbent Andrew Cuomo. Her campaign focused on critical issues like income inequality and universal healthcare, although she ultimately lost the Democratic primary. Despite her defeat, she was nominated by the Working Families Party.
