Sara Montiel, born María Antonia Abad on March 10, 1928, in Campo de Criptana, Castile–La Mancha, was a celebrated Spanish singer and actress who later became a naturalized citizen of Mexico. Montiel's remarkable career took off with her iconic role in Juan de Orduña's 1957 film *El Último Cuplé*, which catapulted her to stardom across Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

Her impressive body of work includes notable films such as *El Último Cuplé* and *La Violetera*, both of which achieved unprecedented box office success in the Spanish-speaking film industry during the 1950s and 1960s. Montiel also made her mark in the cinematic adaptation of Cervantes's classic novel, portraying Antonia, Don Quixote's niece, in the 1947 Spanish film version.

Despite her fame, some of her works faced controversies, such as the 1973 ban of her film *Varietes* in Beijing. Montiel's influence extended into contemporary cinema, as evidenced by her portrayal in Pedro Almodóvar's *Bad Education*, where a male actor in drag (Gael García Bernal) embodied her legacy through the character Zahara, incorporating a clip from her film. Sara Montiel passed away on April 8, 2013, leaving behind a rich legacy in the arts.
