Topsy Jane (2 December 1938 – 4 January 2014) was a prominent British actress known for her work in the film and television industry during the 1960s. Born Topsy Jane Legge in Erdington, Birmingham, she was the daughter of Anna Maud and Albert Harry Legge, a dairy-man turned telephone engineer. Influenced by her father's leftist ideals, she pursued an education at Paget Road School and Garrett's Green College, initially aiming to become a children's nurse. However, her passion for acting blossomed through her participation in amateur theater groups, leading her to explore a professional career in the performing arts.

Topsy Jane's early roles included notable appearances in productions such as The Fanatics (1960), The Alchemist (1961), and Emergency Ward 10 (1962). Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Audrey in Tony Richardson's acclaimed film The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), alongside Tom Courtenay. Although she was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, she chose to star in Billy Liar (1963) instead. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from this role due to mental health challenges, later diagnosed as schizophrenia, and Julie Christie ultimately stepped in.

Topsy Jane passed away from lung cancer at the age of 75 in Birmingham. She left behind her son, William, and a grandson, and was laid to rest in Sutton New Hall Cemetery following a private family funeral. Her contributions to British cinema remain cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
