Ronnie James Dio, born Ronald James Padavona on July 10, 1942, was a legendary figure in American rock and heavy metal music, leaving an indelible mark as a vocalist and songwriter until his passing on May 16, 2010. His musical journey spanned several influential bands, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own project, Dio. Dio was celebrated for his extraordinary vocal strength and emotive delivery, earning him a reputation as one of the greatest heavy metal singers of all time. He also played a significant role in shaping metal culture, famously popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture.

Throughout his career, Dio contributed to numerous notable works, including the iconic Black Sabbath albums and the classic Dio releases such as "Holy Diver." In 2009, he reunited with former Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice to form Heaven & Hell, culminating in the release of their studio album, "The Devil You Know." His collective work has resulted in over 47 million album sales across all bands he participated in.

Dio's battle with stomach cancer ended his life in 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California. One of his final recordings, "Metal Will Never Die," serves as a testament to his enduring legacy in the metal genre.
