Laurence Hanray (16 May 1874 – 28 November 1947), also recognized as Lawrence Hanray, was a distinguished British actor known for his contributions to both film and theatre. Born Lawrence Henry Jacobs in St John's Wood, London, he was the son of glass manufacturer Angelo Jacobs and Leah Nathan.
In 1897, following financial troubles, his father adopted the surname Hanray, a name Laurence had already been using professionally since at least 1892. He debuted as part of the Hermann Vezin Theatre Company, taking on supporting roles in classics like Hamlet and Macbeth at Her Majesty's Theatre in Dundee. Hanray's career expanded internationally when he toured Australia and New Zealand between 1901 and 1904, notably portraying Carraway Bones in the farce *Turned Up* at the Theatre Royal, Perth.
In 1914, he wed Dorothy Mary Chambers Farnsworth, though their union was cut short by her untimely death in 1918. Shortly after, he married fellow actress Lois Grace Heatherley, with whom he collaborated on numerous productions, including *The Faithful Heart* and *Escape*. The couple welcomed a daughter, Ursula Susan Edith Hanray, in 1923, who later became a child actress.
Hanray remained active in his field until shortly before his passing at age 73, with his last confirmed engagement reported in September 1947. He died after an operation in London, leaving behind a legacy enriched by his extensive work on stage and in film. Lois passed away in 1966 at the age of 74.
