Jeff Conaway
Jeffrey Charles William Michael Conaway was a prominent American actor recognized for his performances in the film Grease and the television series Taxi and Babylon 5. He also took on the role of director for the 1992 film Bikini Summer 2.
Conaway spent part of his childhood with his grandparents in South Carolina, which influenced his Southern accent. At the age of ten, he accompanied his mother to a casting audition for Arthur Penn's Broadway production All the Way Home, set in Knoxville, Tennessee. His audition led to a featured role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which ran from November 29, 1960, to September 16, 1961, garnering a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Conaway remained with the production for its entire duration before touring with Critic's Choice.
He began his career as a child model and completed his high school education at the Quintano School for Young Professionals. Following this, he attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and later transferred to New York University. While studying at NYU, he appeared in commercials and starred in a production of The Threepenny Opera. Conaway made his film debut in the 1971 drama Jennifer on My Mind, which featured actors like Robert De Niro.
In 1972, he was part of the original cast of the Broadway musical Grease, where he eventually stepped into the lead role of Danny Zuko. After gaining recognition in series television with Happy Days and guest appearances on various shows, he starred as Bobby Wheeler in the acclaimed series Taxi, which premiered in 1978.
Conaway had brief stints in other TV dramas, including the fantasy series Wizards and Warriors and was involved in guest roles in various other productions. His role as Zack Allan on Babylon 5 from 1994 to 1999 is particularly memorable. Beyond acting, he also pursued music, leading a rock band called The 3 1/2 in the mid-1960s.
