Ulrich Matthes was born in Berlin and began his journey into the world of acting in the early 1980s, studying under the guidance of Else Bongers. Initially, he pursued degrees in German and English with the aspiration of becoming a teacher, while simultaneously taking private acting lessons. Matthes made his professional debut at the Vereinigte Bühnen in Krefeld, where he portrayed the lead role in "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg." His career later took him to esteemed venues such as Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, the Bavarian State Theatre, the Munich Studio Theater, and the renowned Schaubühne. Since the 2004/2005 season, he has been part of the ensemble at Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In the 2004 film "The Ninth Day," he portrayed Fr. Henri Kremer, a Catholic priest held captive at Dachau.

In 2005, Matthes was honored as "Actor of the Year" by 'Theater heute' for his remarkable performance in Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?".

Additionally, Ulrich Matthes has lent his voice to dub several prominent American actors, including Kenneth Branagh, Malcolm McDowell, Charlie Sheen, Ralph Fiennes, and Richard Thomas, showcasing his versatility and talent in both stage and screen performances.
