Born in Ulsan, South Korea, Kim Min-kyu grew up with a younger sister. His educational journey began at Munhyeon Elementary School, continued through Hwaam Middle School, and culminated at Moonhyeon High School, although he later transferred to Youngdong High School due to his burgeoning career.
