Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, more widely recognized as Lenin, was born on April 22, 1870, in Simbirsk, Russia, and passed away on January 21, 1924. He emerged as a pivotal figure in the Russian Revolution, serving as the leader of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1922 and subsequently as the head of the Soviet Union until his death. A committed Marxist, Lenin formulated a distinct interpretation of Marxism known as Leninism, which laid the groundwork for a one-party communist state led by the Russian Communist Party.

Lenin's political journey was deeply influenced by personal tragedy; the execution of his brother in 1887 for revolutionary activities spurred his commitment to socialist ideals. Expelled from Kazan Imperial University for protesting against the Tsarist regime, he pursued legal studies while actively engaging in revolutionary activities. His activism led to his arrest in 1897 and subsequent exile, during which he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After returning to Russia, he played a crucial role in the ideological split of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1903, leading the Bolshevik faction.

Following the February Revolution of 1917, Lenin returned to Russia and led the October Revolution, which resulted in the Bolsheviks seizing power. His government implemented significant reforms, including land redistribution and nationalization of industries, while also withdrawing from World War I through the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. He oversaw the Russian Civil War and introduced the New Economic Policy in 1921 to mitigate economic crises. Despite his declining health, Lenin's legacy was cemented as he laid the foundation for the Soviet state, with Joseph Stalin eventually rising to prominence in his wake.
