Alex Briley

1 title Acting Apr 12, 1947 New York City, New York, USA

Alexander Briley, born on April 12, 1951, in Harlem, New York City, is a celebrated American vocalist known for his role as the original "G.I." in the iconic disco group Village People. Raised in a devout Christian household, he was the son of a minister and grew up in Harlem and Mount Vernon, New York. From a young age, Briley showcased his musical talent through church singing and later honed his skills at the University of Hartford.

Briley's career took a pivotal turn when he connected with producer Jacques Morali, thanks to Village People member Victor Willis. Initially performing in casual attire, he embraced the character of a soldier for the group's 1978 album, *Cruisin'*, and soon after donned a sailor’s outfit for the hit single *In the Navy* in 1979, helping to define the band's vibrant persona.

Tragedy struck Briley's family when his younger brother, Jonathan, an audio engineer at Windows on the World, lost his life during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Jonathan, who died in the North Tower, was later speculated to be the figure known as The Falling Man in a haunting photograph capturing that fateful day. Briley's contributions to music, combined with his personal experiences, have carved a unique legacy, making him a notable figure in both disco history and as a voice of resilience in the face of tragedy.
