He is particularly remembered for his poignant performance as Celie’s husband, Mister, in the acclaimed adaptation of Alice Walker's novel, The Color Purple, and as Lieutenant James McFee in the gripping thriller, Witness. His other notable films include To Sleep with Anger, Predator 2, Angels in the Outfield, and Operation Dumbo Drop, for which he earned the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
