She was the daughter of actress Laura Straub and screenwriter Allan Scott, with a family background enriched by the arts, including her uncle, Adrian Scott, a blacklisted screenwriter.

In 1964, she married Lee Rich, a pioneering partner at Lorimar Productions, and the couple welcomed two children before their divorce in 1983. Despite their separation, Scott and Rich maintained a strong friendship until his passing in 2012.

Throughout the 1970s, Scott continued to build her acting portfolio with numerous television roles while also pursuing her education at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she studied landscape architecture.
