Rosemary Theby (April 8, 1892 – November 10, 1973) was a prominent American actress known for her extensive work in silent and early sound films, with an impressive filmography that includes around 250 titles from 1911 to 1940. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, as Rosemary Theresa Theby, she honed her craft at Sargent's School in New York, where her striking features and dark hair caught the attention of filmmakers.
Theby began her cinematic journey with the Vitagraph production of *The Wager*, quickly rising to stardom with Universal Pictures by 1915. During World War I, her compassionate nature shone through when she cared for a Lithuanian refugee, who later became her maid in Hollywood amidst a staffing crisis in 1920.
One of her notable performances was as Miss Corintee in the D.W. Griffith film *The Great Love* (1918), where she portrayed a German spy with finesse. She transitioned from comedic roles to more serious characters over her career, including a memorable turn as a Chinese vampire in *Clung* (1927), directed by Emmett Flynn.
Despite offers to perform on stage, Theby remained dedicated to her film career, valuing the higher salary she earned in movies. She was married to actor and director Harry Myers until his passing in 1938, after which she wed Truitt Hughes, with whom she spent her later years in Los Angeles. Theby, who supported Calvin Coolidge during the 1924 election, passed away from circulatory shock at the age of 81.
