Robert Montgomery Knight, widely known as Bobby Knight and affectionately dubbed "the General," was born on October 25, 1940. He is a celebrated former college basketball coach in the United States. At the time of his retirement, Knight had achieved an impressive total of 902 NCAA Division I men's college basketball victories, ranking him fifth on the all-time list, behind notable figures such as Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Bob Huggins, and Jim Boeheim.

Knight's most significant tenure was as head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000, where he led the team to three NCAA championships, one National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title, and 11 Big Ten Conference championships. His 1975-76 squad notably went undefeated throughout the season, clinching the NCAA championship—a feat that remains unmatched in men's college basketball. Over his career, Knight garnered four National Coach of the Year awards and eight Big Ten Coach of the Year titles. Additionally, he coached the USA men's Olympic team to gold in 1984, joining an elite group of coaches who have triumphed at both the NCAA and Olympic levels.

Renowned for his strategic innovation, Knight popularized the motion offense and maintained a strong academic record for his players, with none of his teams facing NCAA sanctions. However, his coaching style was often controversial due to his fiery temperament, leading to moments of infamy, including the infamous chair-throwing incident. Following a series of confrontations, Knight was dismissed from Indiana in 2000. He later joined ESPN, where he provided analysis for college basketball until the 2014-15 season.
