Franco Columbu
Franco Columbu, born on August 7, 1941, in Sardinia, Italy, was a renowned bodybuilder, actor, and author, celebrated for his impressive achievements in the world of fitness. Standing at 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm), Columbu defied the odds by clinching the prestigious Mr. Olympia title twice, first in 1976 and again in 1981. His journey to fame began in 1965 during a bodybuilding competition in Munich, where he forged a lifelong friendship with Arnold Schwarzenegger. When Schwarzenegger moved to the United States, he invited Columbu to join him, solidifying their bond that would endure for 54 years until Columbu's passing.
Upon relocating to the U.S. in the 1970s, Columbu ventured into the film industry, taking on various minor roles, including appearances alongside his close friend Schwarzenegger in several iconic films. Not only did he contribute to the bodybuilding community through his competitive career, but he also shared his knowledge and experiences as an author, inspiring countless fitness enthusiasts.
Despite his success in America, Columbu frequently returned to his beloved Sardinia for vacations, where he ultimately passed away on August 30, 2021, at the age of 78. His legacy as a pioneer in bodybuilding and a cherished friend and mentor continues to inspire future generations.
