Pauline Black, born Belinda Magnus OBE DL on October 23, 1953, in Romford, Essex, is a celebrated English singer, actress, and author whose career spans over four decades. She gained widespread recognition in the late 1970s as the lead vocalist of the influential 2 Tone ska band, The Selecter. The band achieved significant success, with four of their singles, including "On My Radio," "Three Minute Hero," "Missing Words," and "The Whisper," charting in the UK's Top 40 during the late '70s and early '80s. Renowned music publication Rolling Stone praised Black as possessing "the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release," highlighting her enchanting soprano and theatrical presence.

Born to an Anglo-Jewish mother and Nigerian father, Black was adopted by a white couple and raised in Coventry. She pursued studies in science at Lanchester Polytechnic before working as a radiographer in the NHS for five years. In 1979, Black co-founded The Selecter, which played a crucial role in initiating the ska revival alongside bands like The Specials and Madness. After the group disbanded in 1982, she transitioned to television, co-hosting the children's quiz show "Hold Tight" and appearing in various dramas including "The Bill" and "Hollyoaks," where she played Diane Valentine.

In addition to her television work, Black earned acclaim for her stage performances, notably winning the 1991 Time Out award for Best Actress for her role as Billie Holiday in "All or Nothing at All." Her film credits include a notable collaboration with Christopher Lee in the horror film "Funny Man." Black's multifaceted career continues to inspire, showcasing her rich contributions to music and the arts.
