Betty Driver
Betty Driver, born in 1920 at the Prebend Nursing Home in Leicester, was the older of two daughters to Frederick and Nellie Driver. Weighing 5.5 kg (12 lb) at birth, she would go on to have a tumultuous life marked by her complex relationships and a challenging family dynamic. During her teenage years, Driver experienced several romantic entanglements, all thwarted by her mother, who sought to retain her daughter's financial contributions. Driver lamented the lack of familial support, recalling that her earnings were mismanaged by her parents, and special occasions like birthdays and Christmas went uncelebrated.
In December 1953, Driver entered into matrimony with South African singer Wally Peterson, a decision she made partly in rebellion against her mother's control. The couple met on *The Betty Driver Show* in 1949, but their marriage was fraught with difficulties, including a miscarriage and health issues that required a hysterectomy. Despite her affection for Peterson, Driver ultimately faced his infidelities and left him after seven years, returning to England in a financially precarious state, supported by her sister.
Betty Driver became a beloved figure known for her role as the cook in *Coronation Street*, particularly recognized for her character's Lancashire hotpot, despite being a vegetarian herself. She maintained a close bond with her sister Freda until Freda's passing in 2008. Driver's life came to an end on October 15, 2011, at the age of 91, following a battle with pneumonia, leaving behind a legacy marked by resilience and talent.
