Chris McNair

Chris McNair, born in Fordyce, Arkansas, emerged as a significant figure in the civil rights movement following the tragic loss of his daughter, Denise McNair, in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. A World War II veteran, he proudly served in the United States Army before pursuing higher education, ultimately earning a degree in agronomy from Tuskegee University in 1949.

In Birmingham, McNair established a successful photography business, capturing the essence of his community while also engaging in public service. His political career began in earnest when he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, where he served from 1973 to 1981 as a member of the Democratic Party. His commitment to public service continued as he took on the role of a commissioner for Jefferson County, holding this position from 1986 until 2001.
