Tõnis Rätsep, born on June 30, 1947, in Viljandi, Estonia, is a multifaceted talent renowned for his contributions as an actor, musician, educator, poet, and playwright. Growing up in a family with a strong connection to dairy—his father was a dairyman and his mother worked in a dairy laboratory—he eventually moved to Rakvere, where he completed his education at Rakvere Secondary School No. 1 in 1965. During this time, he also honed his musical skills, graduating from Rakvere Music School with a focus on the bass accordion.

In pursuit of further education, Rätsep enrolled at Tallinn University of Technology in 1968, where he studied energetics and graduated in 1972. However, his passion for the performing arts led him to the Performing Arts Department of the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre). Under the guidance of the esteemed actor and pedagogue Voldemar Panso, he completed his acting studies in the same year, alongside notable peers such as Kersti Kreismann and Juhan Viiding.
