Anaïs Mitchell
Anaïs Mitchell (born March 26, 1981) is a multifaceted American artist known for her contributions as a singer-songwriter, musician, and playwright. Over the course of her career, she has released eight studio albums, with notable works including Hadestown (2010), Young Man in America (2012), Child Ballads (2013), and her self-titled album, Anaïs Mitchell (2022).
Mitchell's groundbreaking album Hadestown evolved into a critically acclaimed stage musical, co-created with director Rachel Chavkin. The production premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in the summer of 2016 and made its Canadian debut at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton the following year. It later graced London's National Theatre in November 2018 and debuted on Broadway on April 17, 2019, at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The Broadway version of Hadestown garnered immense success, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. For her contributions, Mitchell received the Tony Award for Best Original Score and was nominated for Best Book of a Musical. The cast album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2020.
In addition to her musical achievements, Mitchell authored her first book, Working on a Song: The Lyrics of Hadestown, published on October 6, 2020. She was also recognized as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2020. Furthermore, she is a member of the band Bonny Light Horseman, which released its self-titled debut in 2020, followed by Golden Rolling Holy in 2022 and Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free, set for release in 2024.
